Soundstreams is very excited to present the new compositions inspired by Claude Vivier's " Love Songs". The four talented composers come from Universities accross Ontario and Quebec. They include: York University, Wilfrid Laurier University, University of Western Ontario and University of Montreal.
We are pleased to be partnering with the Glenn Gould School and look forward to the performances by the rising star of the vocal community, Wallis Guinta and her talented colleague on the piano, Suren Barry.

PERFORMERS:
Wallis Giunta, mezzo soprano
Hailed by critics as a "talented and artistically mature" performer with a "voice of satin purity" that is "strong, supple and...utterly beautiful", mezzo Wallis Giunta has begun a diverse and vibrant musical career. Most recently, Wallis created the role of Pandora in the world-premiere of Pandora's Locker by Canadian composer, Dean Burry. At 22, she has performed roles including Cherubino in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro with Mario Bernardi, Hermia in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream at The Banff Centre, Clarina in Rossini's La Cambiale di Matrimonio, and Sally in Barber's A Hand of Bridge. Upcoming engagements include Ernesto in Haydn's Il Mondo Della Luna (Opera in Concert/Mallon, 2009), Dorabella in Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte (The Glenn Gould School/Bernardi, 2009), and Cherubino in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (Opera Atelier, 2010). Miss. Giunta is also a critically acclaimed recitalist, with multiple performances for The Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, The Banff Centre, and The Toronto Arts and Letters Club. Wallis is currently completing an Artist Diploma at The Glenn Gould School, studying with Jean MacPhail, and will be joining the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio in September of 2009.
Suren Barry
Canadians first read about Suren Barry in the Ottawa Citizen, April 30, 2001, in an article entitled « 11-year-old shines at Kiwanis Music Festival. » Since then he has been competing in this Ottawa festival annually and has been awarded numerous trophies and prizes. Consistently impressing judges and critics alike, his playing is described as « musical, with an innate sense of sonority », and « displaying artistry, impressive maturity, depth and mastery for one so young.»
By the age of 12, Suren won both the 2003 Ontario Music Festivals Association (OMFA) as well as the Ottawa Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA). He has participated in the Canadian Music Competion where he placed third nationally in 2004 and second in 2006. In 2006, he was the provincial winner of the Ontario Music Festival Association competition in the open piano category, and was selected to represent Ottawa again at this competition in 2007 and in 2008.
Suren Barry has been invited to perform before audiences in Ottawa, Montreal and Trois-Rivières. He has given concerts at the Chapelle historique du Bon Pasteur in Montreal on an annual basis since 2006. He was invited to perform as part of the cultural celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Montreal, and has given recitals at the Salle Aram Khatchaturian in 2005 and 2008. Suren is also a frequent recitalist in Ottawa where he performs in various venues, the benefits of which go towards causes such as the Children of the Nork Marash Orphanage in Armenia as well as the Ottawa Food Bank. In the summer of 2007, he was showcased in two concerts as a « Rising Star » in the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. He has been given the opportunity to perform in masterclasses given by renowned artists such as Andre Laplante, Jean-Paul Sevilla, Karismeh Felfeli, Jacques Rouvier and Louis Lortie.
Suren is currently studying with John Perry at the Glenn Gould School.
COMPOSERS:
Francis St-Arnaud
Born in Montreal in 1983, Francis St-Arnaud obtained his bachelor's degree in instrumental composition with Alain Lalonde at the University of Montreal. He is on is way to completing his masters degree with Ana Sokolovic at this same University. His repertory include several works for chamber orchestra, symphony orchestra, string quartet, flute and piano and a work for percussion and piano. In 2007 Francis was invited in Czech Republic to take part in a workshop, where he conducted one of is pieces for chamber orchestra.
Nancy Tam
Nancy Tam is an emerging composer/improviser/pianist in her last year ofstudies at Wilfrid Laurier University studying with Peter Hatch and Glenn Buhr in composition and improvisation. From 2004 to 2008, Nancy studied piano under new music specialist, Elaine Lau. During this time, she was in a new music piano duo, Perpetual Commotion with pianist Philip Enchin coached by Boyd McDonald. She was a featured student in piano masterclasses with Fredrick Rzewski and Pauline Oliveros. In the summer of 2007 Nancy was a selected participant of Arraymusic's Young Composers' Workshop and in April 2008 the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony Orchestra read her first orchestral composition, Still Waiting. Nancy has been most recently featured as a soloist with Digital Prowess in their rendition of Fredrick Rzewski's Coming Together on the stage of Dundas Square downtown Toronto for New Music Festival in Toronto. She iscurrently on the concert series with the Toy Piano Composers concert series in Toronto. She still performs regularly at New Music Concerts at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Sean Kim
Seong-Hyun Sean Kim (Ph.D. Candidate), B.Mus., M.Mus., was born in Seoul, Korea 1978. He attended the University of Western Ontario to complete a Bachelors degree in theory and composition (2001) and a Masters degree in composition in 2003. While at Western as a masters and bachelor student, Sean studied piano with John-Paul Bracey and Gwen Beamish, harpsichord with Dr. Sandra Mangsen, composition with, among others, Dr. Omar Daniel and Dr. Peter Paul Koprowsky, and conducting with Jerome Summers. Currently, he is working on a Doctor of Philosophy degree in music composition under the guidance of Dr. Paul Frehner at the UWO. Sean's compositions have been performed by the UWO Chamber Orchestra, the UWO Percussion Ensemble, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra, the Esprit Orchestra in Toronto, the Blyth Festival Orchestra and the Korean-Canadian Symphony Orchestra.
Other musical endeavours include: music director and organist for St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Arva; examiner for Conservatory Canada; adjudicator for Kiwanis Music Festivals; instructor of music theory at the University of Western Ontario; conductor for the Blyth Festival Orchestra, and as a guest conductor for various small and large ensembles in Southwestern Ontario including the London Singers.
Emilie LeBel
Emilie LeBel is an emerging composer presently based in Toronto. Her compositions aim to avoid and break traditional boundaries in style, form and substance. She strives to create music that is imaginative, embraces the unusual and draws from a wide spectrum of sounds.
Emilie has studied at the University of Victoria, Harris Institute for the Arts and York University. She recently participated as a composer at Le Centre d'arts Orford's Sound Art Workshop, The Scotia Festival of Music, The Sound Travels Festival and The Banff Centre. She has received several grants and awards for her creative work and is grateful to have benefited from the generous support of The York University Graduate Development Fund, The W. Lawrence Heisey Award in Fine Art, and The Canada Council for the Arts Travel Grant, The Richardson Foundation Scholarship, and The Banff Centre.
Emilie composes both acoustic and electroacoustic works for concerts, film and stage. She has also worked on a variety of collaborative projects with visual, performance and video artists. She draws on many influences to create her compositions including her classical training, her work with visual art, her fascination with electronics, her interest in interdisciplinary projects and her involvement with contemporary improvisation.
Emilie enjoys an active life both in and outside the city when not involved with the arts. In her spare time she enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, squash, cycling, hiking, canoeing, reading, photography and cooking.
